Marie Provine

Most of my working life was divided between teaching and research in law and political science on the one hand, and a love of sketching, photography, animals, and art making on the other. Since retirement, I have had time to develop my painting skills, first in oils, and then in pastel, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic. 

Oils and acrylic remain my favorite media. Favorite subjects are animals (including human figures) and rustic landscapes. I have volunteered for years as an animal rehabilitator, experiencing all sorts of creatures, from baby racoons to ducks. Currently my focus is on caring for owls at Liberty Wildlife in Phoenix. I love to visit wild places and capture a bit of what I see, either on the spot as a plein air painter, or from the photos I take. 

I strive to communicate my appreciation for the natural world and for the intelligence and sensitivity of the animals we meet. Sharing artmaking with others is also a priority. I have served as president of my local art guild for the past three years and as a volunteer who makes  art with dementia patients. 

Exhibition experience

Marie has exhibited widely throughout Arizona in juried shows, galleries, arts organizations, and cultural venues, with work accepted into exhibitions at Shemer Art Center, Vision Gallery Chandler, Scottsdale Artists Guild, Scottsdale Artists School, Herberger Gallery, Herberger Theatre, FoundRE Phoenix, First Studio, Chandler Center for the Arts, Portland on the Park, Arizona Plein Air Painters, Mountain Artists Guild, Arizona Art Alliance, and other regional venues. 

Her recent exhibition history includes juried acceptance into Shemer’s current Let’s Play exhibition, Vision Gallery Chandler’s Unlovables exhibition, Scottsdale Artists School’s Best and Brightest, Herberger Theatre’s Bob’s Spot, FoundRE Phoenix, First Studio’s Resistance and Recyclamation exhibitions, and multiple Herberger Gallery shows. Several of her exhibited works have sold, including pieces shown at Herberger Theatre, Portland on the Park, FoundRE Phoenix, Artlink’s Valley Coffee Company competition, Taliesin West, and Scottsdale Artists School.

Marie’s work has also received recognition, including Honorable Mention at the Scottsdale Artists Guild in March 2026 and Honorable Mention in the Arizona Art Alliance The Heat is On Juried Exhibition in July 2021. 

In addition to her gallery and exhibition work, she illustrated Finding Zachariah, published in October 2024, contributing 11 drawings along with an artist bio. Earlier highlights include being selected by Arizona Citizens for the Arts to have her watercolor awarded at the Arizona Governor’s Arts Awards gala in 2020, being featured in ASU’s Emeritus Voices in 2019, and serving as the featured artist at Morrison Institute at ASU Downtown Phoenix in 2018, where several of her paintings were placed on semi-permanent exhibit.

Currently, nine of her paintings are on permanent display at the Morrison Institute in Phoenix, and she is the  curator for the art at ASU’s downtown campus.
